WHY ESSENTIAL OILS?

 

I have a unique history with essential oils since my first experience with them was at the young age of 5.  I grew up in a holistic household where our medicine cabinet was filled with herbs and essential oils.  When we got sick my mom would break out the eucalyptus.  If we had an annoying pimple, she would whip out the tea tree oil.  Essential oils followed with me as I got older, and, when I got to college, I realized how many people did not know about the healing power of plants.  I found myself always with someone knocking on my door wanting me to make them some tea or tincture to take, actually WANTING to use holistic remedies because it was working!  It was at that point that I realized I needed to share with people whenever I could how powerful nature solutions are.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

​

Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants.  This extraction happens through a distillation process from the flower, seed, bark or leaves.  Each essential oil has a unique aromatic compound which captures the aromatic essence of the plant.  Essential oils are powerful, and when inhaled the scent molecules travel to the olfactory nerves and then to the brain.  They then go journey to the amygdala which is the emotional center of the brain.  It takes 22 seconds for the molecules to reach the brain, 2 minutes until oils can be found in the blood stream, and 20 minutes until oils have affected every cell in the body.  So, it is important to make sure you are using pure essential oils and realize not every essential oil is the same.

Most essential oils on the market are only 10% essential oil.  THAT’S IT!  Legally a company can advertise their product as pure essential oil and have only 10% of essential oil in it.  What does this mean?  It means that most of the oils you find on the market are mixed with either chemicals or carrier oils.  Meaning you definitely don’t want to be inhaling them or putting them on your skin, and definitely not taking internally.  When I realized this, I reevaluated the essential oils I was using at the time since I wasn’t avoiding chemicals by using oils, I was actually still using chemicals! Not all oils are created equal.  I was mind blown.
